Latest Opinion Poll Conducted Online Shows Opposition Most Preferred Presidential Candidate In 2027

A viral social media poll has reignited debate over the shape and readiness of Kenya’s opposition as the 2027 General Election draws closer, exposing both enthusiasm and deep fractures within its ranks.

The Facebook poll, which circulated widely and attracted thousands of participants, asked users to choose their preferred opposition presidential candidate from four established figures: former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and NARC-Kenya leader Martha Karua. 

What began as a simple online vote quickly evolved into a heated exchange of political arguments, reflecting shifting loyalties and unresolved rivalries.

Fred Matiang’i dominated much of the conversation. Many contributors portrayed him as firm, structured, and effective, citing his past performance in government as evidence of executive capability. A noticeable strand of opinion suggested that, should opposition forces coalesce, Matiang’i could emerge as the most competitive challenger to President William Ruto, potentially framing the race as a two-horse contest.

Support for Kalonzo Musyoka focused less on excitement and more on experience. His backers highlighted his long presence in opposition politics and argued that institutional reforms, such as the establishment of a formal Office of the Opposition Leader, would strengthen accountability while giving seasoned politicians a defined national platform ahead of 2027.

Rigathi Gachagua’s inclusion triggered sharp divisions. Supporters pointed to his grassroots networks and influence in key regions, while critics raised questions about the political and legal consequences of his impeachment, casting doubt on his viability over the long term.

Martha Karua received broad respect for her consistency and reform agenda. However, many commentators noted that while her integrity commands admiration, it has yet to translate into visible electoral momentum.
