Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has today morning joined faithful at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church to mark Ash Wednesday, signalling the beginning of the Lenten season in the Catholic calendar.
Uhuru arrived quietly at the Nyali-based church in Mombasa County and took part in the morning mass alongside other worshippers.
Dressed modestly, the former Head of State blended with the congregation as priests led prayers and the traditional imposition of ashes on the foreheads of the faithful.
Ash Wednesday is an important day for Christians, especially Catholics. It marks the start of Lent, a 40-day period of prayer, fasting and repentance leading to Easter. During the service, believers are reminded of the need for humility, reflection and spiritual renewal
The mass at the coastal church was calm and prayerful. Security around the former President was present but not disruptive, allowing normal church activities to continue. At one point, congregants were seen greeting him warmly after the service.
Uhuru has largely kept a low public profile since leaving office in 2022. His appearance at the church comes at a time when political activities are slowly gaining momentum across the country ahead of the 2027 General Election.
However, his attendance at the mass appeared purely religious, with no political speeches or statements made.
Church leaders called on Kenyans to use the Lenten period to promote peace, unity and reconciliation.
They urged leaders and citizens alike to reflect on their actions and work towards building a more just and compassionate society.
