Raila Allegedly Confessed Junet Singlehandedly Cost Him 2022 Presidency, Lawyer Reveals Details

Renowned lawyer Saitabao Ole Kanchory has ignited fresh political controversy after alleging that the late opposition chief Raila Odinga privately blamed Suna East MP Junet Mohamed for his defeat in the 2022 General Election.

In a strongly worded statement, Kanchory insisted that Junet Mohamed has no moral authority to speak about the 2022 polls, arguing that his actions critically undermined Raila Odinga’s presidential bid at a decisive moment.

“I repeat, Junet Mohamed cannot talk of 2022. Let him talk about anything else but not 2022,” Kanchory said, underscoring what he described as deep, unresolved grievances within the opposition leadership.

According to Kanchory, Raila Odinga personally confided in him, admitting that Junet Mohamed had “almost singlehandedly” cost him the election, a claim that, if true, raises serious questions about internal party loyalty and strategy.

The outspoken lawyer further alleged that despite this knowledge, Raila chose to retain and even promote Junet Mohamed within his political circle, a decision he attributes to calculated political maneuvering rather than forgiveness or trust.

Kanchory claimed Raila was already planning what he termed a “sellout,” and therefore required a reliable intermediary to manage sensitive political negotiations, a role he says Junet Mohamed was best positioned to play.

“The only reason Raila retained and even promoted Junet was because he needed a broker,” Kanchory asserted, describing Junet as “the best broker money can buy” in Kenya’s high-stakes political marketplace.

The remarks have sent shockwaves through the Orange Democratic Movement, a party already grappling with internal divisions, generational tensions, and questions over accountability following successive electoral disappointments.

While Junet Mohamed has previously dismissed accusations linking him to Raila’s 2022 loss, Kanchory’s claims add a new, personal dimension by invoking alleged private conversations with the ODM leader himself.

Political analysts warn that such public accusations risk reopening old wounds within the opposition, potentially weakening cohesion ahead of critical national debates and the long road toward the 2027 General Election.
