Chaos Erupts in Sagana As Residents Turns Against Gachagua after Mentioning Ruto in His Rally

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s entourage was on Friday thrown into disarray after teargas was reportedly lobbed at their convoy in Sagana as they headed to Kagio town in Mwea, Kirinyaga County.

According to eyewitnesses and members of Gachagua’s team, the incident occurred as the convoy passed through Sagana, a key junction linking several towns in the Mt Kenya region.

Tension escalated when security officers moved in to disperse crowds that had gathered along the road, leading to the use of teargas.

The sudden turn of events caused panic among supporters and temporarily halted the convoy’s progress.

Videos and images circulating on social media showed people scampering for safety as clouds of teargas engulfed parts of the road.

Some vehicles were forced to make abrupt turns while others stopped briefly as occupants sought refuge.

Members of Gachagua’s entourage accused security agencies of using excessive force, claiming the gathering was peaceful and posed no threat.

Gachagua was reportedly on his way to Kagio for a series of engagements, including meetings with local leaders and supporters.

His allies described the incident as part of a broader pattern of intimidation against leaders perceived to be critical of the government.

They argued that such actions undermine democratic freedoms, including the right to movement and assembly.

On the other hand, local security officials maintained that their actions were aimed at maintaining public order and preventing potential chaos along the busy highway.

They cited concerns over traffic disruption and public safety, noting that Sagana often experiences congestion when political convoys pass through.

The incident has sparked mixed reactions across the Mt Kenya region and online platforms. Supporters of the former DP condemned the teargassing, terming it unnecessary and politically motivated, while others urged leaders to adhere to existing regulations governing public gatherings and motorcades.

As political temperatures continue to rise, the Sagana incident adds to growing debate over security operations, political tolerance, and the shrinking space for dissent in the country.
