Wetang’ula Shares Details of His Last Meeting with Cyrus Jirongo

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has shared details of his last meeting with the late Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, who died in a tragic road accident near Karai, Naivasha.

Visiting Jirongo’s home in Lumakanda on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, Wetang’ula narrated that the late politician called him on December 9, 2025, while he was in Uganda, requesting a meeting.

Upon returning to Kenya, Wetang’ula contacted Jirongo on December 12, and they met at Karen Oasis Resort, spending time together discussing personal matters.

Jirongo had reached out to console Wetang’ula over the death of his mother, Anne Namaemba, whom he had been unable to attend the burial for.

Jirongo also promised to attend the funeral of Wetang’ula’s brother, James Mukwana, in Tuuti Marakaru, Bungoma County, on December 18, 2025.

“When I returned home, I called him on December 12, and we met at a hotel where Jirongo explained why he wanted to meet.

He promised to attend my brother’s funeral, as he had missed my mother’s burial,” Wetang’ula said.

The two parted ways around 9:00 p.m., expecting to meet again at the funeral, only for Wetang’ula to learn the following morning of Jirongo’s untimely death.

“I was shocked to hear that Jirongo had died. He was a great personal friend, and we had known each other since 1988. He touched my life in many ways, including in supporting children’s education,” he added.

Wetang’ula urged Kenyans to honor Jirongo’s legacy of unity and community service.

Jirongo’s body is currently at Lee Funeral Home and will be moved on Saturday, December 27, 2025, to CITAM Valley Road for prayers and a requiem mass.

It will then spend the night at his Gigiri residence before being flown to his Kitale home on Sunday, December 28.

On Monday morning, December 29, the body will be transported to his Lumakanda home in Lugari Constituency, where he served as MP, ahead of his burial on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

“Let us all strive to live Jirongo’s spirit, as he wished for unity in our community and country,” Wetang’ula concluded.
