Uhuru Kenyatta Breaks Silence After Raila Odinga’s Death: “My Heart Is Heavy”

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined Kenyans in mourning the late ODM Party leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who reportedly passed away on the morning of Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

Speaking through a heartfelt message shared shortly after the sad news spread, Uhuru expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the man he called a “brother and comrade.”

“My heart is heavy, and my spirit is burdened with grief that is both profound and deeply personal. The news of Raila’s passing has left a silence that echoes across our nation,” he stated.

Uhuru described Raila as more than a political rival — calling him a vital part of Kenya’s democratic journey.

“We often stood on opposite sides of politics, yet shared the same love for this country,” he said.

“Raila challenged us to think harder and dream bigger for Kenya.”

He reflected on their transformation from fierce opponents to partners in national unity after the famous 2018 Handshake, which calmed months of political tension following the disputed 2017 elections.

“That journey taught me the true measure of the man,” Uhuru said.

“He was a passionate patriot who believed in justice, fairness, and peace more than in personal gain.”

The former president added that Raila’s contributions went beyond politics. He described him as a symbol of resilience and courage — a man who stood firm through decades of struggle for democracy and equality.

“I have lost a friend and a brother,” Uhuru wrote.

“I will miss our conversations — sometimes challenging, but always full of insight and conviction.”

Uhuru also sent condolences to Raila’s widow, Mama Ida Odinga, and the entire family. “You have shared Baba with the nation for a lifetime, and we mourn with you,” he said.

He concluded his tribute with a message of remembrance:

“Kenya has lost a father of the nation and a true son of the soil. His legacy will live on in the peace he helped build and the hope he inspired.”
