NEWS JUST IN: Reprieve as Mike Sonko Wins Ksh537 Million Case Against Ruto Govt

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has won a case against the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA), which had frozen nine of his bank accounts containing over Ksh537 million.

The court ruled that the agency failed to provide sufficient evidence linking Sonko to any criminal activity or money laundering.

The ruling, delivered on Wednesday, comes after years of legal battles for the former governor, who was removed from office in 2020 amid corruption allegations.

Sonko’s lawyer, Harrison Kinyanjui, said the court confirmed that the frozen funds were part of the former governor’s legitimate property and were not acquired illegally.

“The Honourable Justice Sifuna has ruled in favour of Governor Sonko, stating that suspicion alone is not enough to prove wrongdoing. The ARA could not show evidence that the money in his accounts came from any illegal activity,” Kinyanjui said.

During the hearing, both Sonko and the ARA presented evidence. The court found that Sonko had owned businesses and properties before becoming Nairobi County Governor.

The ARA was expected to compare his financial records before and after his tenure but failed to provide this information, leading to the dismissal of their case.

Kinyanjui added that the ruling vindicates Sonko, who has long claimed that the legal cases against him were politically motivated attempts to tarnish his reputation and facilitate his impeachment.

“The court has confirmed that all funds frozen for the past five years are legally his property,” Kinyanjui said.

Since leaving office, Sonko has faced multiple corruption cases. In December 2024, a court overturned his acquittal in a Ksh357 million graft case, and earlier this year, he was charged in 11 counts of Ksh24 million graft allegations related to conflict of interest and abuse of office.
