The late Fidel Castro Odinga, the eldest son of Raila Odinga, was long seen as the one most likely to carry on his father’s political legacy.
Many who knew him described him as charismatic, bold, and deeply committed to his family name.
His parents named him after Fidel Castro, the Cuban revolutionary leader who ruled his country for more than 50 years.
According to Ida Odinga, while Raila admired the revolutionary figure greatly, she personally had her doubts about naming their firstborn after such a powerful political figure.
Fidel grew up to be a confident and ambitious man, often praised for his humility despite coming from a prominent political family.
His untimely death on January 4, 2015, at his home in Nairobi, came as a heavy blow to the Odinga family and the country at large.
He had spent the night out with friends and was discovered unresponsive the following morning, shocking many who knew him as vibrant and full of life.
In 2007, Fidel married Veronica Wanjiru Ng’ang’a in a traditional Kikuyu ceremony. However, the marriage ended a few years later due to irreconcilable differences.
He later found love again with Lwam Gatachew Bekele, an Eritrean national.
The two welcomed their son in July 2013, adding a new chapter to Fidel’s life.
Lwam is the daughter of Timnit Embaye from the Tigrinya ethnic community in Eritrea. She has lived in Kenya for more than three decades and is also a mother to Faheem Gatachew Bekele.
During Fidel’s requiem mass, Lwam delivered a heartfelt tribute to her late husband, moving many to tears as she remembered the man she loved and shared a life with.
