Eyewitnesses said the bus, which was full of travelers, lost control before swerving off the road and overturning on its side.
Residents nearby were the first to arrive at the scene and quickly began pulling people out of the wreckage. Some of the injured were taken to local health facilities for urgent treatment.
Videos and photos later shared online showed the extent of the damage. The bus had a shattered windscreen, broken windows, and twisted seats.
Some survivors were seen being helped out through windows while others received first aid by the roadside before ambulances arrived.
Police officers who visited the scene confirmed investigations were underway. Preliminary findings suggested that either high speed or a slippery stretch of the road could have led to the accident.
Authorities promised to give a full report once investigations were complete.
The incident adds to a worrying rise in accidents reported across the country in recent days. On Sunday, a tragic crash claimed 16 lives at Kikopey near Gilgil on the Nakuru–Nairobi highway.
In that case, a 14-seater matatu collided head-on with a truck, killing 13 people instantly while three others later died in hospital.
Transport officials have continued to call on drivers to exercise caution on highways, especially during the rainy season when roads can be slippery.
Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) shows that Kenya has lost 3,397 people in road accidents between January and September this year. This is slightly higher than the 3,369 lives lost over the same period in 2024. Pedestrians remain the most affected, followed by cyclists and passengers.
Meanwhile, victims of the Mwingi accident continue to receive treatment as families and relatives rush to hospitals to check on their loved ones. Police have urged all road users to stay alert and report reckless driving to help curb the rising number of accidents on Kenyan roads.
