The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has started building a modern shopping mall inside Moi Barracks, Eldoret, to improve the welfare of soldiers and their families.
The project, called the Defence Forces Welfare Services (DEFWES) Mall, was officially launched by the Chief of Defence Forces, General Charles Kahariri, on Tuesday, October 14.
According to the military leadership, the new mall will include supermarkets, restaurants, and fuel stations that will serve soldiers, veterans, and their families at affordable prices.
The aim is to make life easier for KDF members and promote their social and economic well-being.
General Kahariri said the project is part of a wider plan by KDF to modernize its facilities and support the people who dedicate their lives to protecting the country.
“Our goal is to give our officers and their families the comfort they deserve while serving Kenya,” he said during the groundbreaking ceremony.
The mall is expected to become a key centre of activity for the defence community in the Eldoret region.
It will also create jobs for civilians working with the military and help boost local businesses that will supply goods and services to the new facility.
The launch came ahead of the annual KDF Day Celebrations, where President William Ruto joined the soldiers at Moi Barracks to honour their service.
This year, the President wore full military uniform for the first time since taking office, symbolizing unity and respect for the men and women in uniform.
KDF Day is held every year to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers who protect Kenya from internal and external threats. The event also provides an opportunity to appreciate the families who stand behind them.
Meanwhile, Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya launched a fresh KDF recruitment drive earlier this week.
She assured the public that the process would be free, fair, and transparent, warning anyone against bribery or corruption during the exercise.
