Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has disclosed that he held several private meetings with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i after his return from the United States, where Matiang’i reportedly expressed interest in running for the presidency.
Speaking during an interview on KTN News on Sunday night, Gachagua said Matiang’i showed a strong desire to join their political camp and asked for support for his potential presidential bid.
“Fred Matiang’i is a good man. When he returned from the US, I held several private meetings with him where he expressed his desire to join us and his interest in serving as president if we supported him, and we welcomed him,” Gachagua stated.
The revelation comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with several former government officials signaling their return to active politics.
Matiang’i, who served under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has largely kept a low profile since the 2022 elections, occasionally appearing at private events or international forums.
Gachagua’s remarks appear to position him as a central figure in ongoing behind-the-scenes consultations shaping Kenya’s next political phase.
He further noted that the push for political change in the country is being driven not by opposition leaders but by ordinary citizens frustrated by the state of governance.
“It’s not the united opposition that wants to form government; it is the people of Kenya who have decided they want change. Ours is just to provide leadership. We have listened to Kenyans, and they want change like yesterday,” he said.
