UDA MP Alleges Plot by Opposition Leaders to Punish Matiang'i After Meeting With Jubilee Leaders

Mathira Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi has alleged that a section of opposition leaders is targeting former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i following his meeting with Jubilee leaders on Tuesday, September 23.

In a post shared on social mediat, Wamumbi claimed that certain opposition figures had launched a fight against Matiang’i for making independent political decisions.

The UDA MP warned the unnamed opposition leaders that they would have to confront many others who support the former CS. According to the lawmaker, no one has the moral authority to control any leader.

Wamumbi emphasized that every politician in Kenya has the right to associate with whomever they chose. He urged the opposition to let Matiang’i be.

Although the Mathira MP did not name anyone, many comments under his post suggested he could be referring to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The two are fierce political rivals.

Matiang'i, who has declared his interest in the 2027 presidential race, held discussions with former Jubilee MPs led by the party's Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni.

The meeting came just days before Jubilee's National Delegates Conference (NDC) set for Friday, September 26, at the Jockey Club, Ngong Racecourse, Nairobi.

The NDC, convened by Jubilee party leader and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, is expected to endorse Matiang'i as the party's deputy leader while Uhuru retains his position, according to The Star.

Matiang'i is part of the united opposition alliance alongside Gachagua, Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Justin Muturi.

His possible move to Jubilee could strain relations, particularly with Gachagua, whose Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) competes with Jubilee in the vote-rich Mount Kenya region.
