Homa Bay County was thrown into shock after Boyd Were, son of the late MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, narrowly escaped a suspected attack at his rural home in Kasipul.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening during a community meeting where Boyd was engaging residents on development matters.
According to information gathered by our team, which later inspired several other reports, Boyd had invited locals to his compound for discussions on challenges affecting the area.
During the session, an unidentified man, pretending to be part of the crowd, allegedly attempted to approach Boyd while armed.
Felix Oburu, head of Boyd’s communication team, said the man was carrying two machetes and a hidden knife.
Security became suspicious after noticing something bulging from the suspect’s trousers.
“Boyd meets residents openly at his compound to listen to their concerns. This man waited quietly for his turn, but a guard noticed a machete tucked at his waist. He was stopped immediately before reaching mheshimiwa,” Oburu explained.
Upon frisking, security officers recovered a second machete on the opposite side of the suspect’s trousers.
Moments later, during questioning, a knife fell from his jacket, raising further alarm.
The man gave conflicting information about his identity, first claiming to be from Kasipul and later from Karachuonyo.
Residents from both areas, however, said they did not recognize him.
He was restrained and handed over to the police, who later took him to Oyugis Police Station for interrogation.
Boyd, though visibly shaken, has not issued a public statement about the incident. His team, however, dismissed speculation that the attack was politically motivated.
“Our focus remains on leadership and development. We believe no amount of threats or intimidation will stop Boyd’s mission to serve the people,” Oburu added.
The incident comes just four months after Boyd’s father, Charles Ong’ondo Were, was assassinated near City Mortuary while returning from Parliament.
Following his father’s death, Boyd announced his bid to succeed him in the upcoming November 27 by-election, vowing to continue his legacy.
Police are still investigating the suspect’s motives and possible connections to the earlier assassination.
