Raila At Crossroads As MCAs Warns On What They'll Do to ODM If He Touches Edwin Sifuna

Tensions within ODM erupted during the burial of former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel, where two Laikipia MCAs openly attacked party leader Raila Odinga for alleged betrayal and neglect.

Mukogodo West MCA Nicholas Lempaira accused Raila of failing to honor promises of EALA seats and abandoning loyal members like Lempurkel, who suffered imprisonment and harassment for his support of ODM.

“Right now, we are in trouble. We don’t know whether we are in UDA or in a half-loaf government. But I want to thank Edwin Sifuna for his firm stand.

We support you, and if we see party leaders touching you, we at the grassroots will all walk out of ODM.”

Sossian MCA Sammy Lekopien echoed the criticism, saying ODM had neglected its grassroots and left loyalists “as orphans.”

“Only the two of us were elected on ODM tickets to the Laikipia County Assembly. With Lempurkel’s death, we are left as orphans.

It is sad to see loyal members unappreciated after losing in the general election, a situation that discourages aspirants from using ODM tickets,” said Mr. Lekopien.

Mr. Sifuna, ODM’s Secretary-General, has strongly opposed ODM’s cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza government.

Of late, the Nairobi senator has been a vocal critic of ODM’s cooperation with the Kenya Kwanza government, aligning with young leaders in the Kenya Moja movement.

The Nairobi senator has aligned with young leaders such as Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, under the political movement Kenya Moja, which claims it will liberate the country from government oppression and ensure better service delivery to citizens.

Although Mr. Sifuna accompanied Mr. Odinga to the funeral, he avoided commenting on ODM’s internal wrangles.

He steered clear of the internal wrangles, instead urging the government to clear health insurance debts owed to Catholic Church hospitals.

All four Laikipia MPs skipped the funeral, including area MP Ms. Sarah Korere. Governors, senators, and MPs from Kajiado, Samburu, and Narok counties led the burial ceremony.
