Mt Kenya on Edge? Ruto Allies Panic as 2027 Election Threatens Regional Grip on Power

Mount Kenya leaders allied to President William Ruto are growing increasingly uneasy as signs emerge that the 2027 General Election may mark a turning point for the region’s influence in national politics.

With hostility towards the Kenya Kwanza government mounting, fears are rife that the President could reconsider his 2027 power matrix—possibly sidelining Mt Kenya from a prime spot in his next administration.

The anxiety comes amid growing resentment from voters in the region, many of whom feel betrayed by what they describe as broken promises, rising taxes, and a cost of living crisis.

For leaders who campaigned hard for Ruto in 2022, the political ground is shifting dangerously beneath their feet.

“There is real concern that if this anger continues, the President might opt for a different strategy—maybe even drop Mt Kenya from the deputy presidency or major dockets,” a senior UDA MP from Nyeri confessed on condition of anonymity.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, once seen as the region’s political kingpin, is no longer viewed as untouchable.

Rumors are swirling that he may be replaced on the 2027 ticket, a move that would send shockwaves through the region.

Gachagua, for his part, has fought back, accusing unnamed forces within Kenya Kwanza of plotting to divide and weaken the mountain bloc.

Meanwhile, President Ruto’s allies like National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Governor Anne Waiguru continue to defend the administration, insisting that Mount Kenya remains central to Kenya Kwanza’s vision.

“Our support for the President is solid. Development is ongoing. Let’s not fall for divisive politics,” Waiguru said during a recent rally in Kirinyaga.

But behind the scenes, meetings are intensifying. Leaders are reportedly exploring fallback options, including reviving dormant parties or forming new coalitions, in case the fallout becomes irreversible.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s silence is only fueling speculation. Though officially retired, many believe he may re-enter the political fray, possibly backing a new presidential candidate or mobilizing Mt Kenya behind an alternative bloc.
