Govt Addresses Claims Ruto, CS Wahome Grabbed Ruiru Land - Threatens Legal Action Against Thang'wa

Nairobi — Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Alice Wahome, has strongly denied claims linking her, President William Ruto, and her daughter to a controversial land-grabbing case in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

She has also announced plans to take legal action against Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa for allegedly defaming her.

The controversy began when Senator Thang’wa, speaking at a political rally alongside DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, accused the CS of colluding with her daughter and President Ruto to forcefully acquire land in Ruiru.

According to the senator, landowners who had already developed their plots were being pressured to surrender their title deeds.

Responding on Monday, September 15, 2025, CS Wahome dismissed the allegations as “false and malicious,” insisting that she had no role in the land transaction and did not own any property in the area.

She emphasized that her daughter, a lawyer, was only working with her former law partner and had no involvement in the case.

“I will take Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa to court within the next 30 days for scandalising me without evidence,” Wahome stated during a press briefing.

She added that the senator had deliberately tried to politicize the matter and mislead the public.

CS Wahome further explained that the disputed land had long been tied up in court disputes. The July 10 court ruling confirmed that the property had been fraudulently sold without the consent of the rightful owners, the Kanyutu family.

She said those who purchased the land were aware of the legal issues and had bought it cheaply.

“This issue is being used to malign my character and misinform Kenyans,” Wahome said.

“I will not be intimidated by false political accusations.”

The CS also clarified that she had previously represented the Kanyutu family in one of the litigations before joining the Cabinet.

She described the senator’s statements as an attempt to gain political mileage rather than seek the truth.

Meanwhile, Senator Thang’wa has yet to respond to the threat of legal action.
