According to reports seen by The Eastleigh Voice, the crash happened in the Kariandusi area near Gilgil.
Witnesses said the 14-seater matatu was heading towards Nakuru when it collided with a trailer that appeared to lose control.
The matatu was badly damaged from the front, while the trailer overturned into a ditch a few metres away.
Photos shared online showed the wreckage lying across the highway, with vehicle parts scattered all over the road. Area residents were the first to arrive at the scene.
They tried to rescue survivors and offered first aid before emergency teams got there.
The accident brought traffic to a standstill for hours. Vehicles stretched back as far as Kikopey as police and rescue officials struggled to clear the wreckage.
