Afraid Of Luhya? Sources Reveals Why Raila Is Reluctant to Sack Edwin Sifuna Despite Opposing Ruto

Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna stirred controversy last week during a televised interview on Citizen TV, where he declared that ODM’s agreement with Ruto’s UDA party was dead and unenforceable.

The ODM secretary general went further, vowing to prioritize impeaching President Ruto if the matter came before the Senate.

“On my list of priorities, removing President Ruto from office is at the top. If impeachment reaches the Senate, I will vote him out without hesitation,” Sifuna said, sparking backlash from ODM members aligned with the "Tutam" pro-cooperation faction.

Since then, the party has splintered, with some defending Sifuna’s stance while others accuse him of being manipulated by rival interests to destabilize ODM.

However, Political analyst Javas Bigambo believes Sifuna is unlikely to be removed but predicts the meeting will seek to limit his freedom to speak independently on party-government relations.

“I don’t think he will be ousted, but his influence will be clipped. The party will assert that only official statements reflect ODM’s position, effectively reining him in,” Bigambo said.

He added: “Sifuna needs to remember his prominence is tied to his role as ODM’s secretary-general. Once his latitude is curtailed, his personal opinions will carry little weight.”

Western Kenya ODM leaders, on the other hand, have largely rallied behind Sifuna.
