Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has strongly condemned the arrest and prosecution of Matisi Ward MCA and Trans Nzoia County Assembly Deputy Speaker Obed Mwale, terming the state action an overt attempt to suppress opposition voices in the region.
The vocal lawmaker, who is actively eyeing the Trans Nzoia senatorial seat on a Linda Mwananchi Movement ticket, was apprehended by security officers in Kitale and subsequently transferred to Kapenguria Police Station in neighbouring West Pokot County.
Appearing before the Kapenguria Law Courts, Mwale faced state charges including allegations of funding criminal activities and attempting to obstruct President William Ruto’s motorcade during a presidential tour of Kitale.
Governor Natembeya and Linda Mwananchi leadership mobilized a legal defense team of 107 attorneys to represent the deputy speaker, arguing that the criminal allegations were fabricated to shield political incumbents from competitive electoral challenges.
Party officials asserted that the state harassment stems from Mwale’s growing popularity as he prepares to challenge United Democratic Alliance (UDA) incumbent Senator Allan Chesang in the 2027 General Election.
Following extensive legal submissions by the defense battery, the Kapenguria Law Courts set Mwale free unconditionally, treating the state’s charges with the contempt they deserved.
Addressing supporters outside the courthouse, Mwale commended the judiciary for upholding constitutional freedoms and warned that state machinery will not succeed in silencing young leaders advocating for grassroots accountability.
