Tension gripped Ol Kalou after demonstrations erupted in support of former Deputy President , with angry residents clashing with police officers during protests linked to the growing “WANTAM” political movement in the region.
The protests reportedly began after groups of residents gathered in the town center chanting pro-Gachagua slogans while insisting that Ol Kalou remains a political stronghold loyal to the former deputy president and his allies.
Demonstrators accused President of neglecting the Mt Kenya region, with some residents openly declaring that leaders associated with the president were no longer welcome in their area.
The situation quickly escalated after anti-riot police officers attempted to disperse the crowds, leading to running battles between security personnel and groups of protesters who resisted orders to leave the streets.
Witnesses claimed police officers fired live bullets and tear gas canisters into the air as panic spread across sections of the town, forcing traders and residents to temporarily close businesses and seek safety.
Supporters of the “WANTAM” movement insisted their demonstrations were aimed at defending Gachagua’s political influence, arguing that the region should remain united behind leaders they believe represent local interests effectively.
Several residents reportedly voiced frustration over ongoing political wrangles within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, saying divisions among senior leaders have continued to fuel uncertainty and tension across parts of the Mt Kenya region.
Despite the unrest, local leaders appealed for calm and urged residents to avoid violence, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace even as political competition intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election campaigns.
