The victim has been identified as Hannah Wanjiku, a 53-year-old mother of six. Her family revealed that she had been facing domestic violence before her tragic death.
According to Kigumo Sub-county Police Commander Hassan Bashir, detectives have arrested Wanjiku’s estranged husband, two of her sons, and a taxi driver linked to the case.
The police believe the suspects may have been involved in transporting or planning the disposal of the body.
“The taxi driver will help us establish whether he was hired by the husband or the sons to deliver the bag,” Bashir explained.
Relatives say Wanjiku had endured years of abuse at her matrimonial home in Mairi village. Her sister, Mary Kiiru, told journalists that the deceased had left the marriage several months ago and rented a house in Njiiris village.
There, she worked as a casual laborer in tea plantations while trying to rebuild her life.
“She had three children from her marriage, now aged 22, 20 and 19. Because of constant quarrels, she moved out and started living alone. Sadly, we received news this week that she had been murdered,” Kiiru said.
Family members added that before her marriage, Wanjiku had three other children who remained under the care of their grandparents.
The bizarre discovery was made after a taxi driver delivered a bag to Kangari Police Station.
The driver claimed he had been hired by a man wearing a black hoodie to transport the package from Makomboki to Kangari township for KSh 500.
When he reached the agreed location, no one showed up to collect the bag. Fearing something was wrong, he went to the police station.
Officers unwrapped the parcel and were shocked to find Wanjiku’s body stuffed inside, wrapped in blankets and paper bags.
The case has left residents of Murang’a in shock and raised fresh concerns about rising cases of gender-based violence.
Police have assured the public that thorough investigations are underway and that those responsible will face justice.
For Wanjiku’s family, the arrest of the husband and sons brings some hope, but their pain remains deep.
“She didn’t deserve such a cruel death,” her sister said.
