Babu Owino Unveils 2032 Presidential Bid, Eyes One-Term Nairobi Governor Stint

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has unveiled an ambitious political roadmap, declaring his intention to run for Nairobi governor in the next election, serve a single term, and later contest for the presidency in 2032.

Speaking in Kisumu on April 26, 2026, during activities linked to the Linda Mwananchi movement, the outspoken legislator outlined his long-term vision, positioning himself as a future national leader.

Addressing supporters, Owino said he would first focus on leading the capital before shifting his attention to the presidency.

His remarks came during a series of mobilisation events attended by key opposition figures, including Edwin Sifuna and James Orengo.

The leaders had earlier attended a church service at Triumphant Christian Church in Nyalenda before engaging residents ahead of a planned rally.

Owino’s declaration signals a calculated political move, with the Nairobi governorship widely seen as a powerful platform that can propel leaders to national prominence.

By limiting himself to one term, he appears keen to fast-track his journey to higher office while maintaining momentum within the opposition ranks.

During the Kisumu engagements, Sifuna praised Owino’s rise, linking his political journey to his humble beginnings.

He highlighted how Owino grew up in Nyalenda, where his mother engaged in small-scale brewing, and contrasted that with his current position in national leadership.

“Babu is proof that one can rise from very humble beginnings to positions of influence,” Sifuna told supporters, drawing applause from the crowd.

The Linda Mwananchi movement has in recent weeks intensified its nationwide mobilisation efforts, holding rallies aimed at consolidating support ahead of the 2027 General Election.

After earlier stops in Nakuru, the team shifted focus to Kisumu, a region considered a key opposition stronghold.

Owino has emerged as one of the movement’s vocal figures, frequently using his platform to rally support and criticise the current administration led by President William Ruto.

His latest announcement adds a new layer to his political messaging, clearly outlining a roadmap that stretches beyond the immediate electoral cycle.

At the same time, Owino has raised concerns over alleged intimidation linked to his political activities.

In recent days, he claimed that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations were targeting his security personnel in an attempt to disrupt the Kisumu rally.

He also alleged that his aide had previously been arrested and assaulted, claims that have further heightened tensions around the mobilisation efforts.

Despite these concerns, the Kisumu events proceeded with large crowds and high energy, reflecting growing interest in the movement’s agenda.

Owino was also seen intervening to maintain calm when minor disruptions occurred, reinforcing his image as a hands-on political figure.
