Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday received a hostile reception in Chuka, Tharaka Nithi County, during his Mt Kenya rally attended by several opposition leaders.
While addressing the gathering, Gachagua was forced to pause his speech after a section of the crowd began heckling him.
The DCP Party leader accused Deputy President Kithure Kindiki of allegedly hiring youths to disrupt the rally.
However, Gachagua instructed security officers not to interfere with the hecklers, saying they were few and could not stop the meeting.
He also insisted that he was addressing people in his own political backyard thus can't be intimidated.
“Soprano (Kindiki) ni mtu bure kabisa. Ametuma vijana nyumbani waharibu mkutano. Wewe wachana nao, wako wachache sana,” Gachagua said.
This loosely translates to: “Kindiki is a useless man. He has sent youths here at home to disrupt the meeting. Leave them alone; they are very few.”
He later invited Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to address the gathering as the hecklers were drowned out by opposition supporters.
Gachagua also accused President William Ruto of betraying the Mt Kenya region, arguing that the area overwhelmingly supported his presidential bid in the 2022 General Election.
The former Deputy President says he will mobilize Mt Kenya voters to support the opposition.
His remarks come amid an intensifying political battle in the Mt Kenya region, where several leaders are positioning themselves as the area’s spokesperson ahead of the 2027 and 2032 political cycles.
Gachagua has repeatedly insisted that he remains the region’s political point man, arguing that his former position as Deputy President places him at the top of the region’s political hierarchy.
