Residents of Mumias East in Kakamega County were left stunned after a 99-year-old man returned to his rural home after reportedly spending about six decades working in Uganda, only to discover that the family he left behind was no longer there.
Boniface Muhandia is said to have left his village in 1965 in search of greener pastures across the border in Uganda.
At the time, he reportedly left behind his wife and four children, hoping that the job opportunity would help him support his young family.
According to locals, Muhandia spent many years working as a mason in Uganda, where he is believed to have lived for most of his adult life. However, communication between him and his family gradually faded until all contact was eventually lost. Over time, relatives back home assumed that he had died.
After decades away, the elderly man recently made the long journey back to his home village carrying only a walking stick and a small suitcase.
What awaited him was heartbreaking. He was informed that his wife had died several years ago, while two of his sons reportedly passed away in the late 1990s. Even the house he had once built had since collapsed.
Despite the painful revelations, villagers and remaining relatives welcomed him warmly, offering him support and reminding him that he still had a place to call home.
