"Kumbe Itakuwa Mzuri Ivi" Kenyans React To Artistic Impression Of Ksh3B New Gikomba Market

Speculations High as President William Ruto unveils plans for a Ksh3 billion modern Gikomba market, promising to transform Nairobi’s iconic trading hub into a contemporary commercial hub.

The announcement has stirred debates among traders, politicians, and the public, with reactions ranging from excitement to skepticism.

An artistic impression of the proposed market, shared online, gives Kenyans a glimpse of glass-fronted stalls, organized trading lanes, and modern amenities that would replace the chaotic open-air structures. Critics, however, question whether the small-scale traders will benefit or be sidelined in the name of modernization.

The government says the project will include proper parking, drainage, and security infrastructure, aiming to reduce congestion and improve the shopping experience.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed cautious optimism, urging authorities to ensure that the plans do not displace traders unfairly or compromise livelihoods.

Political analysts point out that the timing of the announcement is significant, coming after public uproar over the recent Gikomba demolitions.

The project is being framed as both a development milestone and a political maneuver to regain trust among Nairobi’s trading community.

President Ruto’s team insists that the upgrades will benefit everyone, from the small-scale vendors to large wholesalers, while boosting tax revenue and formalizing the market.

Traders have already started sharing opinions on social media, with some praising the modern look while others fear high rental costs and bureaucratic hurdles.
