President William Ruto is set to travel to Tanzania on Saturday, March 7, to attend the 25th Ordinary Summit of the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State.
The high-level meeting is expected to bring together regional leaders to deliberate on key issues affecting the bloc, including trade integration, security, infrastructure development and the ongoing peace efforts in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The summit comes at a time when the region is facing mounting economic pressure and security concerns that require coordinated action.
According to officials familiar with the preparations, discussions will focus on strengthening the common market, removing non-tariff barriers and accelerating major cross-border infrastructure projects aimed at boosting intra-regional trade.
Leaders are also expected to review progress made under the EAC’s political federation agenda.
Security will be high on the agenda, particularly the situation in eastern Congo, where renewed fighting has displaced thousands.
Kenya has previously deployed troops under regional arrangements to support stabilisation efforts, and Ruto is likely to push for a unified approach in addressing the crisis.
The summit also provides an opportunity for member states to reflect on the bloc’s 25-year journey, achievements and the challenges that still lie ahead.
Analysts say the meeting will test the region’s commitment to collective problem-solving at a time when global economic uncertainty continues to impact local economies.
For Kenya, the visit underscores Nairobi’s continued role in regional diplomacy and economic leadership.
As the country navigates domestic reforms and international engagements, participation in the EAC summit remains central to advancing trade, peace and shared prosperity across East Africa.
