Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has urged President William Ruto to begin preparing for the possibility of an election loss, stressing the importance of upholding democratic traditions in Kenya.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s Sunday Live, Kalonzo emphasized that no leader is invincible, and that fostering a culture of accepting electoral outcomes is crucial for the country’s democratic growth.
“I have to encourage William Ruto to begin to socialize himself to the possibility of an election loss; he will not be the first one.
We want William Ruto to prepare himself to accept, because he is behaving as if he cannot accept a loss, and making Kenyans believe he is insurmountable,” Kalonzo said.
The former Vice President’s remarks come amid growing political tensions as the country edges closer to the 2027 General Election.
Kalonzo further highlighted that cultivating a tradition of leaders accepting defeat is essential for Kenya’s democratic stability.
He suggested that the perception of a leader as unbeatable can be damaging, encouraging a political culture where the winner’s legitimacy is questioned if they lose.
“This is about creating a tradition of leaders accepting defeat,” Kalonzo added, underscoring that democratic systems thrive when electoral outcomes are respected by all parties involved.
Kalonzo’s advice comes at a time when discussions about succession, leadership challenges, and electoral readiness are taking center stage in Kenyan politics.
By encouraging President Ruto to prepare for all possible outcomes, Kalonzo seeks to reinforce democratic norms and safeguard the country against potential post-election disputes.
As the 2027 elections approach, calls from seasoned politicians like Kalonzo to respect the democratic process are expected to shape the political narrative, reminding Kenyans and their leaders that no political figure is beyond accountability or electoral scrutiny.
