"I Want Sifuna & Babu Owino Here As My Lawyers" Drama In Court As Man Disrupts Event

A dramatic moment unfolded at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi after a middle-aged man charged with malicious damage to property insisted that Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino were his lawyers and demanded that they be present before the case could proceed.

The accused, Eliud Kiprotich Rono, appeared before Principal Magistrate Daisy Mutai on Friday, March 6, 2026, where he faced charges of malicious damage to property contrary to Section 339(1) of the Penal Code.

During the court session, Rono caused a brief commotion when he insisted that the Nairobi Senator and the Embakasi East Member of Parliament were his legal representatives.

“Sifuna na Babu Owino ndio lawyers wangu na nataka wakue hapa,” Rono told the court.

The situation escalated further when Rono turned his attention to journalists who were recording the proceedings, angrily questioning who had permitted them to film him.

“Nani amewapea ruhusa ya kunichukua picha? Ondoa hiyo kitu hapo; mimi sipigwi picha,” he said while pointing toward members of the media.

Magistrate Mutai quickly intervened, instructing the accused to calm down and reminding him that the court was responsible for directing proceedings.

“Tulia kwanza. Hautapeana instructions kotini, ni mimi napeana,” the magistrate said firmly.

The court later explained to Rono that while he had the right to be represented by a lawyer of his choice, the court could not compel the individuals he had mentioned to appear on his behalf.

According to the charge sheet, Rono is accused of wilfully destroying the main entrance door at Nyayo House on the 20th floor on March 5, 2026, at around 8:30 a.m., in an attempt to gain access to the building.

Rono pleaded guilty to the charge. The court ordered that he remain in custody until March 23, 2026, when the matter will be mentioned again. A probation officer will also prepare a report to guide the court on the next course of action.
