DCI Finally Reveals What Journalist Owino and a Woman Were Seen Doing in a Hotel Before His Murder

Fresh details have emerged showing the last hours of Nairobi-based freelance journalist and videographer Joseph Owino Jonny, also known as Myles, before he was killed in Naivasha.

Owino’s brother, Robert Joni, said that investigators told him Owino had travelled to Naivasha for an event during the day.

Later that night, he was reportedly seen in a car with a woman.

Journalist Owino and the woman were spotted checking into a hotel to have a meal but did not get the food they wanted, so they moved to another place.

Robert explained that two masked men in a vehicle that had been following them later confronted Owino.

The attackers forced him to drive about 500 metres away, where his body was discovered by the roadside.

Police said the area showed no signs of struggle, suggesting he was likely killed somewhere else before being left there.

A postmortem examination showed that Owino died from strangulation, or suffocation caused by pressure on his mouth and nose.

Government pathologist Titus Ngulungu also noted injuries to the neck, head, and face, with some neck structures missing. Samples were collected for further DNA testing.

Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Epuru said no arrests have been made, but detectives are following important leads.

The woman seen with Owino has given a statement to police, though the family has not received details.

Robert described Owino as a creative and hard-working young man and called on authorities to carry out a full investigation, saying that unanswered questions had made the family’s grief worse.

He demanded justice for his brother.

Owino, the sixth of eight siblings, had worked independently as a photographer and videographer for more than four years.

His body remains at Naivasha Mortuary while police continue investigating the increasing cases of violence in the area.
