Relations between Uganda and the United States have come under strain following a controversial social media post by Uganda’s military chief targeting the family of a prominent opposition leader.
The post, which critics say was both provocative and personal, has drawn sharp condemnation from the U.S., with senior Senator Jim Risch warning that continued harassment of opposition figures could impact bilateral security cooperation.
The post reportedly referenced sensitive family matters of the opposition leader, whose party has increasingly challenged President Yoweri Museveni’s government.
Analysts say this move is part of a broader crackdown on political dissent, which has seen opposition politicians and their associates frequently targeted in state-sponsored campaigns.
In response, Senator Risch, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released a statement condemning the military’s action.
“Targeting the families of opposition leaders is unacceptable and undermines democratic principles,” he said.
The senator also hinted that continued intimidation could lead the U.S. to reconsider aspects of its security collaboration with Uganda, including joint military training programs and intelligence-sharing arrangements.
The Ugandan government, however, defended the military chief’s post, describing it as a personal comment that should not be construed as an official position.
“We remain committed to our security partnerships and dialogue with international partners,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence.
The incident comes at a time when Uganda has been seeking stronger security ties with Western countries, particularly amid regional instability in neighboring South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Analysts warn that escalating political tensions domestically could now spill over into foreign relations, potentially affecting aid, military cooperation, and diplomatic engagement.
Political observers in Kampala say the situation highlights the fragile balance between domestic political control and maintaining international partnerships.
The U.S. response signals that foreign governments are closely monitoring Uganda’s handling of political dissent, and that actions targeting opposition figures could have tangible consequences on diplomatic and security relationships.
