Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome has urged the government to exercise tolerance in the political space, calling for issue-based competition between President William Ruto’s administration and the United Opposition.
Speaking during a public event in Murang’a County, Wahome asked the government to refrain from harassing opposition leaders, noting that criticism is part of a healthy democracy.
She said the opposition must be allowed to play its constitutional role of checking the government, stressing that political differences should not be met with violence.
However, Wahome maintained that meaningful development is achieved from within government, arguing that President Ruto’s administration has rolled out several projects aimed at uplifting the economy and improving livelihoods.
She was accompanied by Kangema MP Peter Kihungi and Maragua MP Mary Waithera, among other local leaders.
Her remarks come in the wake of an incident in which DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua was attacked during a church service at ACK Witima Church in Othaya, Nyeri County.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation from senior government officials, led by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who denounced the violence and directed Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to commence investigations.
Following the attack, opposition leaders held a meeting and warned that they could resort to street protests if no decisive action is taken against those responsible.
