A fresh political twist is brewing within Kenya’s opposition politics after Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma publicly urged Embakasi East MP Babu Owino to return to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and consider deputising Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja in the 2027 elections.
Kaluma made the remarks in a widely shared social media post, arguing that Babu Owino still has a strong political future within ODM despite recent tensions and shifting alliances in the party.
His appeal comes at a time when ODM is facing internal disagreements, with several leaders taking different positions on the party’s direction ahead of the next general election.
The call has stirred debate among political observers and supporters, especially in Nairobi where Sakaja is expected to defend his seat in 2027.
Kaluma’s suggestion of a Sakaja–Babu ticket is being seen by some as a strategic move to bridge political divides and consolidate support among young voters in the capital.
Babu Owino has not officially responded to Kaluma’s request. However, the Embakasi East legislator has recently maintained a cautious stance on party politics, choosing instead to focus on constituency matters and national issues affecting young people.
The development comes just days after renewed tensions rocked ODM following disagreements over party leadership and the direction of the Linda Mwananchi campaign rallies that have been taking place across the country.
The rallies have exposed underlying divisions within the party, with some leaders calling for unity while others push for reforms.
Analysts say Kaluma’s statement reflects growing anxiety within ODM as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of 2027. Whether Babu Owino will heed the call remains to be seen, but the conversation has already added a new layer to Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
