Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has sparked speculation about a potential shift in political allegiance with his recent comments on the impeachment of ex-Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In a television interview on February 17, 2026, Kuria described the 2024 impeachment as unnecessary and untimely, raising eyebrows amid intensifying preparations for the 2027 elections.
Kuria revealed he actively opposed the motion, attempting to persuade members of parliament against it. "I was opposed to the impeachment motion and even spoke against it.
I tried to convince members of parliament that the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua was not in the best interest. We should have tried to control the damage before it worsened.
According to me, the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua was untimely and unnecessary," he stated.
He attributed the escalation to President William Ruto's impatience following Gachagua's press conference in Mombasa during the Gen-Z protests, which overlapped with Ruto's address and strained relations.
Kuria also mentioned reaching out to leaders from the Mount Kenya and Rift Valley regions to halt the proceedings, highlighting efforts to mitigate internal rifts.
The impeachment culminated in a Senate vote on October 17, 2024, where Gachagua faced charges including gross violations of the Constitution for undermining the President and Cabinet. While some charges passed, others did not, leading to his removal.
These remarks have fueled concerns about fracturing alliances within the ruling coalition. As 2027 approaches, Kuria's stance could signal reconciliation attempts or strategic repositioning, especially in key regions.
Kiharu MP Robert Alai responded sharply on social media, urging Kuria to align openly with Gachagua rather than feigning neutrality. Analysts suggest this could exacerbate divisions, influencing voter bases and coalition dynamics ahead of the polls.
