Ruto’s UDA Grassroots Elections in Mt Kenya Are Just Like ODM’s 2022 Struggles - Irungu Nyakera

Opposition politician Irungu Nyakera has slammed the ongoing grassroots elections by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in Mt Kenya, comparing them to ODM’s failed bid to hold similar elections in the region back in 2022.

Nyakera's remarks come as President William Ruto queued to vote at Koilel Primary School in Uasin Gishu County, during the UDA party's attempt to elect officials at the local level.

According to Nyakera, the situation is strikingly similar to ODM's efforts in Mt Kenya, which faced stiff resistance due to the party's unpopularity in the region at the time.

Nyakera argued that while Ruto’s UDA has made inroads in the region, it still faces a steep challenge in gaining a true foothold among the local electorate.

"Just like ODM's struggle in 2022, UDA's grassroots elections will only highlight the party's limited appeal here," Nyakera said.

The opposition politician further criticized Ruto’s actions, accusing him of attempting to secure party loyalty through top-down leadership structures instead of fostering genuine support at the grassroots level.

“The elections may appear democratic, but they are more about consolidating power than engaging with the people," he asserted.

Despite Nyakera’s claims, UDA supporters argue that the party has made significant strides in Mt Kenya since the 2022 general elections, with Ruto’s presidency solidifying its presence in the region.

But critics like Nyakera remain unconvinced, suggesting that, much like ODM’s failed 2022 grassroots elections, UDA's efforts may ultimately fall short in establishing a strong local network.

As the UDA continues to push for its grassroots reforms, all eyes will be on whether these elections can genuinely strengthen the party's base or if Nyakera’s warnings will ring true.
