Speaker Wetang’ula Confirms Death of Nominated MP Joseph Denar Hamisi

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has officially notified the country of the death of nominated Member of Parliament, Hon. Joseph Denar Hamisi.

The Speaker released an official announcement on Saturday morning, stating that the legislator died earlier in the day after battling an illness whose nature had not yet been disclosed. The information was relayed to members of the House and the public.

In the announcement, Speaker Wetang’ula expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that the MP died at around 7:00 am. He described the moment as painful for both Parliament and the nation.

Hon. Hamisi, who originated from Mombasa County, was nominated to Parliament under the Amani National Congress (ANC), a party that was then led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi. His nomination allowed him to represent various public interests in the House.

Speaker Wetang’ula praised the late legislator as a dedicated representative who always gave attention to matters affecting ordinary citizens.

He served in the Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture, as well as the Select Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities.

According to the Speaker, the MP fulfilled his assignments with a high level of seriousness and maturity.

“He will be remembered for his humility, his selfless character, and his dedication to service,” Wetang’ula stated, adding that Parliament joins the family in mourning an upright leader.

Following the news of his death, the National Assembly indicated that it will help the family organise the burial.

Kilifi North MP Owen Baya has been given the responsibility to coordinate House participation in the arrangements.

The Speaker said Parliament will support the family throughout the funeral preparations.

Meanwhile, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi also sent his condolence message. He described the late Hamisi as a steadfast leader who always defended his ideological beliefs without fear.

According to Mudavadi, Hamisi had the unique ability to unite people and support young politicians.

The Prime Cabinet Secretary noted that the MP was admired across the political divide because he remained firm even when political pressure intensified. He said the country has lost a leader driven by principle rather than political shifts.

Hamisi’s death has brought sadness to colleagues and parliamentary staff. Several members are expected to pay tribute to him on the floor of the House during the next sitting.

Sources within Parliament revealed that plans are underway to prepare a remembrance session in honour of the departed leader.

The family is expected to release burial details once medical and logistical processes are completed.

Those close to him say he had been unwell for some time, though little information had been shared publicly.

As the country reflects on his contributions, leaders continue encouraging Kenyans to celebrate Hon. Hamisi’s life and recognise the role he played in strengthening parliamentary engagement.

His passing marks another moment of grief for the 13th Parliament, which has lost several leaders since it was sworn into office.
