Police Recover Stolen Rifle in Kiambu After Suspected Robber is Killed by Mob

Police officers in Kiambu County have recovered a G3 rifle believed to have been stolen during a past incident, following the death of an armed man who was attacked by members of the public on Thursday evening.

Authorities confirmed that the incident took place in the Magana area of Thika East Sub-County.

Residents allegedly confronted a man who had been spotted with a firearm before descending on him.

When police arrived after receiving reports from local administrators, they found the suspect had already succumbed to injuries inflicted by the angry crowd.

According to a statement released on Friday, officers from Munyu Police Station retrieved a G3 rifle, two loaded magazines, and dozens of live rounds at the scene.

Also recovered were blank ammunition, a penknife, and other items believed to have been in the suspect’s possession.

Police said the recovered rifle is suspected to be the same weapon reported missing from within the same region in an earlier incident.

Authorities have now taken the weapon into police custody for ballistic testing to establish when it was last used and whether it was involved in any recent crimes.

“Preliminary findings show a possible link to a case involving the disappearance of a police firearm in the area,” part of the statement read.

Officers handling the matter say they are now tracing the chain of events that led to the disappearance of the gun, how the suspect acquired it, and whether other individuals may be involved.

Police urged communities in the area to remain calm and follow legal channels when encountering suspected criminals.

The service noted that while members of the public often react out of frustration or fear, mob justice remains unlawful and could lead to the loss of innocent lives.

“It is important that residents report suspicious individuals or incidents to the nearest police station instead of resorting to violence,” the service advised.

The National Police Service emphasized its commitment to respond promptly to emergencies and deal lawfully with suspects.

The recovery comes just weeks after security officers in Kisumu engaged in a dramatic pursuit of a 21-year-old suspect found with an AK-47 rifle near Patel Samaj Temple along St. Otieno Oyoo Street.

During that operation, officers cornered the armed young man after he tried to hide within a place of worship. After backup teams were deployed, the suspect was subdued and taken into custody.

Authorities later announced that the weapon had been used in several robbery incidents within the city and was being tested for more links to unsolved crimes.

The suspect in that matter is still under interrogation while awaiting arraignment.
Growing Safety Concerns Over Lost and Stolen Firearms

Security analysts say incidents involving stolen firearms have raised concerns about public safety. They have urged more strict follow-ups whenever state-issued weapons go missing, noting that such guns often find their way into the hands of hardened criminals.

Local residents in Kiambu have also expressed worry over increased reports of youth involved in violent crime, including robbery attacks targeting businesses and isolated homes.

Police say additional patrols are already underway and investigations remain active.

As the Kiambu case develops, officers are hoping that tracing the recovered rifle may provide leads to individuals who might still be in possession of stolen weapons or ammunition.

The identity of the deceased suspect has not been made public, as investigations continue and the case awaits documentation through forensic reports.
