President Yoweri Museveni has dismissed growing concerns over the health and continued detention of opposition stalwart Dr. Kizza Besigye insisting that the state has acted appropriately and that delays in his case are not of the government’s making.
Speaking on the matter Museveni asserted that the correct answer is a quick trial arguing that Besigye’s legal team should demand an expedited process rather than accuse the government of political persecution.
According to Museveni the military court had been prepared to proceed with Besigye’s trial but the case was later moved to a civilian court an action he says required patience while the judicial process unfolds.
He further claimed that Besigye’s deteriorating condition in prison stems from his own decision to embark on a hunger strike a tactic the opposition leader has used in previous detentions to protest what he describes as unjust charges.
Museveni also emphasized that the government has not neglected Besigye’s medical needs.
He noted that the opposition figure’s personal doctors have been granted access to him and allowed to take him to private clinics for evaluations.
If there was need for any additional medical care the government would be advised he added.
The President’s remarks follow widespread reports that Besigye has grown weak, dizzy and increasingly frail after weeks in custody.
His supporters argue that he is being targeted for his political influence while government officials maintain that due legal process is being followed.
The standoff continues to heighten political tensions with Besigye’s health becoming a focal point in the broader debate over justice and opposition rights in Uganda.
