"Kind Soul" Pain as Senior Standard Group Scribe Rashid Idi Dies On Christmas

The Kenyan media community and citizens alike are in deep sorrow following the death of Rashid Mukoya Idi, a senior journalist with the Standard Group.

Idi, renowned for his dedication and innovative approach to visual journalism, passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025, after a brief illness while receiving medical treatment at a Nairobi hospital.

Idi’s career spanned over a decade, during which he played a pivotal role in strengthening visual journalism standards across the group’s platforms.

Beginning his tenure at the Standard Group on January 17, 2013, he quickly became a valued member of the editorial team.

His professionalism and creativity were widely recognized, and he consistently pushed for higher quality in media production, earning respect from both colleagues and industry peers.

Among his notable achievements, Idi won the 2016 CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year Award, alongside reporter Asha Mwilu, a recognition that highlighted his skill in telling compelling stories through visual media.

Colleagues describe him as humble, approachable, and committed, always willing to mentor younger journalists and share his expertise.

Following news of his passing, numerous friends, colleagues, and social media users expressed their grief. Philip Etale, a long-time colleague, shared his heartbreak on Facebook, writing:

“What a sad way to end a colourful and cheerful Christmas Day. Rashid was not only a talented cameraman but also a loyal friend. The news of his passing has hit me hard. Rest well, my brother.”

Similarly, journalist Sam Amany praised Idi’s dedication and warmth:

“I had the privilege of working alongside Rashid on assignments at JKIA, Nyayo Stadium, and across Nairobi. He was meticulous in his craft, always capturing moments that mattered. More importantly, he was a kind and generous person. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”

Colleagues across media houses echoed similar sentiments, noting Idi’s calm demeanor and collaborative nature.

Emmanuel Too simply wrote: “Rest in power, senior Rashid Idi, former colleague at KTN,” while Denish Ochieng lamented the toll 2025 has taken on the media fraternity: “Just go away, 2025. We are tired. Rest easy, ndugu.”

The Standard Group also issued an official statement, extending condolences to Idi’s family, friends, and colleagues.

His remains are expected to be moved to Malaba on Friday, with funeral arrangements scheduled for Saturday, December 27, 2025.

Idi’s passing comes shortly after the death of veteran KBC radio presenter Amina Fakii, who passed away on December 21, 2025, at the age of 83.

Fakii, a respected figure in public broadcasting, was admired for her distinctive voice and decades-long commitment to delivering accurate and engaging radio content. Her death, like Idi’s, has left a void in Kenya’s media landscape.

Kenyans have taken to social media to pay tribute, sharing stories of Idi’s kindness, professionalism, and mentorship.

Messages of support and condolences continue to pour in from across the country, reflecting the deep impact he had both professionally and personally.

Rashid Idi’s legacy will be remembered through his extensive body of work and the countless journalists he inspired.
