BREAKING: 5 Killed in Christmas Day Accident Involving Probox and Trailer Along Kericho-Nakuru Highway

Christmas celebrations turned tragic for several families in Kenya after a road accident along the Kericho–Nakuru highway claimed five lives.

The crash occurred early Thursday morning, December 25, near Kedowa Trading Centre in Kericho County, involving a Toyota Probox and a Mercedes-Benz Actros truck.

According to preliminary reports from Kericho County police commander James Nyatich, the Probox, which was ferrying six passengers—suspected to be young men—collided head-on with the truck while traveling towards Nakuru.

“At around 5 a.m., a Probox ferrying six passengers was rammed into an oncoming truck around the Kedowa area,” confirmed Nyatich.

The force of the collision was devastating, leaving five people dead on the spot. Two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Kericho County Hospital for treatment.

Police believe the victims were part of the same family returning from holiday celebrations when the tragedy struck.

The accident adds to a growing number of road fatalities in the country during the festive season. According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), at least 36 people lost their lives in road accidents over the three days leading up to Christmas, including eight passengers in a separate crash along the Eldoret–Webuye highway.

NTSA reports indicate that the majority of these deaths involved pedestrians and passengers, followed by motorcyclists and pillion riders.

The surge in road accidents is partly attributed to increased travel as Kenyans journey to their hometowns for festive celebrations.

Overspeeding and road safety concerns have been identified as key contributors to these tragedies. In the Kericho–Nakuru incident, police suspect that the Probox was overspeeding at the time of the crash, leading to the fatal head-on collision.

NTSA has repeatedly reminded drivers to adhere to speed limits, avoid drinking and driving, and maintain lane discipline to prevent accidents, particularly during high-traffic periods such as the holiday season.

Since December 20, 2025, NTSA reports show that authorities have detected 1,702 traffic violations involving commercial, public service, and private vehicles.

Additionally, 42 drivers have been arrested, and numerous non-compliant vehicles have been flagged for further inspection. These measures aim to enhance road safety and prevent the increasing number of festive-season accidents.

In response to the surge in road fatalities, NTSA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safety on Kenya’s highways. Officers have been deployed across major routes to monitor traffic, enforce regulations, and assist motorists where necessary.

Despite these efforts, authorities emphasize that driver responsibility remains critical in reducing accidents.

Road users are being urged to take extra precautions, especially during the holiday season when traffic volumes are high.
