Nairobi- Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed warm appreciation for the Luo community, describing them as "very good people" despite revealing he skipped Raila Odinga's burial due to alleged assassination threats from President William Ruto.
During a media engagement with Inooro TV on Sunday, November 16, the DCP party leader made a point of praising the Luo community. "Wajaluo ni watu wazuri sana" (The Luo people are very good people), Gachagua stated.
His comments came as he announced plans to visit Opoda Farm in Bondo during the first week of December with a large delegation to pay respects to the late Raila Odinga's family.
Gachagua claimed he did not attend Raila's burial because "Ruto had planned to attack me," making a serious accusation against his former boss.
The alleged security threat, he explained, prevented him from joining other leaders at the funeral.
"I will be visiting Opoda Farm with my big delegation to mourn the late Hon. Raila Odinga in the first week of December," Gachagua announced.
He confirmed he has spoken with Raila's daughter and the family has agreed to receive him after the November 27 Mbeere North by-election.
The visit follows advice from elders that he should reach out to the Luo community as part of building a united opposition front.
Gachagua's praise is particularly significant given past accusations of tribalism against him.
While in government, his focus on Mt Kenya interests drew criticism, with Luo leaders warning him against targeting Luo officers and making derogatory remarks.
His current warm words and planned visit suggest a shift in approach as he positions himself in opposition, recognizing the need for cross-community unity.
Opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang'i have already visited Raila's grave site.
Gachagua's December visit will test whether his bridge-building efforts are welcomed by the Luo community despite their complicated political history.
