Kindiki’s Winning Formula That Edged Out Gachagua in Mbeere North

New details are coming out about how Deputy President Kithure Kindiki managed to lead the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to victory in the Mbeere North by-election, despite facing strong opposition from some of the biggest political names in the region.

When Kindiki arrived in Mbeere North on November 17, 2025, the UDA team was already feeling the pressure from three powerful leaders: Rigathi Gachagua of the DCP, Justin Muturi of the DP, and Lenny Kivuti of DEP.

The situation looked even tougher because Muturi and Kivuti, who control more than half of the votes in the constituency, were working together for the first time.

Many residents listen to these two leaders closely, so their alliance made the race extremely challenging for UDA.

But instead of backing down, DP Kindiki changed the entire approach. He decided to focus on real issues affecting the semi-arid area and spent more time meeting community leaders.

His strategy team says that between November 17 and November 26, he held over 50 strategy meetings and 17 public rallies.

Behind the scenes, he reportedly held at least four private meetings every day with local leaders, mobilisers, and party agents.

His first big rally in Siakago brought new energy to UDA candidate Leonard Wamuthende, known as Leo. Before this, Leo had been under heavy criticism from Gachagua, Muturi, and Kivuti.

At the rally, Kindiki spoke strongly against Gachagua and promised to defeat him politically in the by-election.

He also promised to stay in Mbeere North until November 28 and return to Nairobi with Leo as the MP-elect.

Throughout the campaigns, Kindiki presented Wamuthende as the best choice for development, saying he would help transform the area with the support of the national government.

When voting ended, Wamuthende won with 15,802 votes, narrowly defeating Newton Karish of DP, who had 15,308 votes.

The winning margin was just 494 votes, but it was enough to secure victory.
