Comedian and activist Eric Omondi has come out strongly to defend Kenya’s Generation Z amid claims that young people failed to participate in the by-elections held on Thursday, November 27, 2025.
Speaking in an Instagram video on Saturday, November 29, Omondi said it was wrong to blame Gen Z for leaders losing in the polls.
Omondi explained that the by-elections were mainly contests between established politicians and influential local figures.
He argued that Gen Z had little interest in these political battles and no direct involvement in them.
“This by-election had nothing to do with Gen Z. They were not part of it, they did not want to be part of it, and they did not understand it.
This by-election was a battle between political fools and principalities. Do not involve Gen Z in your battles,” he said.
He noted that the youth were never expected to participate in such contests, and their absence should not be seen as political disengagement or disloyalty.
According to Omondi, it is unfair to portray young people as uninterested in national issues simply because they chose not to involve themselves in highly localized or complex political processes.
Omondi also highlighted the need for political leaders to create spaces and platforms that genuinely engage young people.
He said Gen Z is willing to participate in issues that affect their future directly, such as education, employment, climate change, and digital innovation.
