"You A Suba Not A Luo" - Khalwale Sparks Tribal Row, Mocks Mbadi’s Claim Of Being 1st Luo To Head Finance Docket

Senator Boni Khalwale has stirred a fierce ethnic debate after his blunt response to National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi’s emotional tribute to the late Raila Odinga in Bondo. Moments after Mbadi’s powerful speech during the state funeral, Khalwale posted on X saying, “Congratulations, but u are a Suba; not a Luo.”

The senator’s remark quickly went viral, drawing widespread criticism from Kenyans who accused him of promoting tribal divisions at a time of national mourning.

Many online users defended Mbadi, saying his decades of loyalty to Raila and his leadership within ODM proved his deep connection to the Luo community, regardless of his Suba roots.

Mbadi had earlier moved mourners at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology with a heartfelt tribute, declaring that he had never betrayed Raila in all his years in politics.

“I have never betrayed Raila Amollo Odinga, not even once — from my days as a university student to the Cabinet today,” he said emotionally.

He praised Raila for mentoring him into leadership, recalling how the late opposition leader had appointed him to several senior positions, including ODM Party Chairman, Minority Leader, and now Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury.

Mbadi proudly stated that he was the first Luo ever to hold the Finance docket in Kenya’s history.

He shared that even when Raila denied him the ODM ticket for Homa Bay Governor, he remained loyal because he trusted Raila’s decision.

“Even when you gave me the sad news that I was not going to be governor, I still stood behind you,” he said.

Mbadi also reflected on the many political betrayals Raila endured, noting that the late leader died when all Luo leaders finally stood united behind him.

“I am glad he rested knowing I never betrayed him,” he said.

Lightening the mood, Mbadi told mourners that his only disagreement with Raila was over football.

“We only differed on soccer — Baba supported Arsenal, I support Manchester United,” he said, drawing laughter from the crowd.

The funeral was attended by President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and dignitaries from across Africa.

However, Khalwale’s divisive remark has since overshadowed the touching tribute, sparking outrage and renewed debate about ethnicity in Kenya’s politics.
