President William Ruto became emotional on Thursday morning, breaking down in tears during a meeting with Kenya’s world athletics champions at State House, Nairobi.
In a rare public display of emotion, the President, known for his composure, appeared visibly moved as he addressed the victorious team in the presence of Youth Affairs and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya.
“I am pleased to welcome you home after your outstanding performance at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan,” Ruto began, before pausing to blow his nose with a handkerchief.
Overcome by emotion, he momentarily halted his remarks, saying in a trembling voice, “You must forgive me, this is an emotional moment. I don’t know why, but I must say congratulations. Let’s give them another round of applause.”
He praised the athletes for their resilience, noting, “To be second best globally out of 198 countries is no small feat. This is a victory we must celebrate and emulate in every sector of our nation.”
Reactions online were mixed. Some Kenyans questioned the authenticity of his tears, suggesting it was a show for cameras.
One user wrote, “It’s easy to cry when cameras are rolling, but what about showing the same emotion for Kenyans affected by policies?”
Others defended the President, commending his heartfelt response and patriotism.
This is not the first time Ruto has displayed emotion in public. He previously teared up during his inauguration thanksgiving service and on several occasions during worship gatherings before the 2022 General Election.
