Kalonzo Surprise Choice Of Powerful Ex Ruto CS As Running Mate That Could Hand Him The Presidency

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka is gaining momentum as a top contender for the presidency in the 2027 general election.

With Raila Odinga now aligned with President William Ruto, Kalonzo has stepped into the opposition vacuum, positioning himself as the face of resistance and reform.

But the real political shake-up could come from his choice of running mate—a move that may redefine the race entirely.

In a dramatic turn, former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi is emerging as a likely candidate for Kalonzo’s deputy.

Muturi, who was sacked by President Ruto in March 2025 and replaced by Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Kiringa Ruku, had increasingly clashed with the Kenya Kwanza administration over issues like alleged police abductions and governance concerns.

His exit has fueled speculation that he may join forces with opposition heavyweights, including Kalonzo and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Muturi’s potential entry into the opposition is significant. As a respected figure from the vote-rich Mount Kenya region, he brings strategic value to Kalonzo’s campaign.

With over five million votes up for grabs in the region, a Kalonzo–Muturi ticket could galvanize central Kenya’s support and reshape the national political equation.

Analysts suggest that this pairing could trigger a “political tsunami,” capable of handing President Ruto a historic defeat and making him Kenya’s first one-term president.

Kalonzo’s national appeal, combined with Muturi’s regional influence and legal acumen, presents a formidable challenge to the incumbent.

While Kalonzo has yet to officially announce his running mate, the signs are clear: the opposition is regrouping, and the Mount Kenya vote is in play.

If Kalonzo taps into Muturi’s credibility and discontent with the current regime, the 2027 race could be his to win.
