Tough Times for Babu Owino as ODM Leader Finally Announces plan to Vie for Nairobi Governor’s Seat

Makadara MP George Aladwa has thrown his hat into the ring for the Nairobi Governor’s seat in 2027, securing the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) backing, a move that could sideline Embakasi East MP Babu Owino’s ambitions.

Aladwa, speaking confidently to the press on Thursday, October 2, 2025, declared that any candidate eyeing the governor’s seat must go through ODM, positioning himself as the party’s frontrunner.

“Anyone who wants the governor’s seat, come through ODM. I’m also in the race for that seat, and I’m ready to face anyone at the primaries,” Aladwa asserted, emphasizing his readiness to lead Nairobi, Kenya’s political and economic hub.

This development deals a blow to Babu Owino, who has been vocal about his gubernatorial aspirations. ODM’s early endorsement of Aladwa signals a strategic move to consolidate support ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested race.

Aladwa’s announcement follows a meeting with ODM leader Raila Odinga on September 2, 2025, where the party paused impeachment talks against incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja, giving him time to address concerns.

Aladwa’s bold stance and ODM’s backing set the stage for a competitive primary, potentially pitting him against Owino and other hopefuls.
