Former nominated senator Gloria Orwoba has sparked sharp political debate after declaring that she will immediately withdraw her support for Fred Okeng’o Matiang’i if he chooses to work with Raila Odinga.
Orwoba, who has been vocal in her backing of Matiang’i, said her loyalty is conditional and cannot stand if Raila joins forces with the former Interior Cabinet Secretary.
She argued that such a partnership would only serve to weaken President William Ruto’s administration and hand Raila more influence in national politics.
“I will stand with Matiang’i, but if Raila decides to abandon the broad-based government and joins him to make Ruto a wantam president, I will drop Matiang’i immediately,” she warned.
“I cannot and will never work with Raila under the same roof.”
Her remarks come at a time when political conversations are shifting towards coalition building and possible realignments ahead of future elections.
Raila Odinga has been at the center of talks on a broad-based government, which is being pushed as a way to unite leaders across political divides.
However, not all leaders support the idea, and Orwoba’s strong words show the level of mistrust that still surrounds Raila’s involvement in national governance.
Political observers note that Matiang’i, who has largely stayed out of active politics since leaving office, is increasingly being mentioned as a potential power player.
His possible return to the political scene has triggered mixed reactions, with some viewing him as a strong alternative voice while others see him as a threat to the ruling administration.
Orwoba’s latest statement has now placed her at the center of these debates, as she draws a firm line between supporting Matiang’i and completely rejecting Raila.
Her stance is likely to fuel more divisions among leaders and supporters as the country waits to see which alliances will shape Kenya’s political future.
