Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has responded to accusations leveled against him by President William Ruto.
Ruto criticized Gachagua for incompetence, corruption, and engaging in divisive political rhetoric.
Speaking late last week, Ruto alleged that Gachagua was impeached because of his inability to lead and claims of corruption. He accused the former deputy of focusing on retrogressive politics that harm national unity.
However, Gachagua fired back, criticizing Ruto for attacking him instead of focusing on developmental projects.
The former deputy president dismissed the allegations, suggesting that Ruto was bitter about losing support from the Mt. Kenya region, which was instrumental in his election victory.
"He is very bitter and angry. For a whole six days, the president has been abusing me and occasionally Kalonzo Musyoka in Western Kenya. Rigathi Gachagua is not a road in Webuye, a hospital in Vihiga, or a slaughterhouse in Bungoma. Instead of launching projects, the president is ranting because the Mt. Kenya voting bloc is gone forever," Gachagua said.
On the corruption allegations, Gachagua hit back, urging Ruto to "look in the mirror" before making such claims. He asserted that he had not been linked to any scandals and accused the current government of dishonesty.
"Mr. President, be honest. Your government is full of deceit. You signed a contract with Western Kenya to build 1,000 kilometers of roads, but you’ve done nothing. You are busy opening transformers instead. You wanted me to help deceive Kenyans, but in matters of lying to Kenyans, I am incompetent," he added.
