KAMPALA, Uganda — Kenyan legal heavyweight and Senior Counsel Martha Karua made a bold appearance at the High Court in Kampala today, leading a team of 10 lawyers in defense of Uganda’s veteran opposition leader, Dr Kizza Besigye.
Karua, a prominent figure in East African politics and a staunch human rights advocate, is spearheading the legal battle alongside Ugandan legal minds, including representation for Hajj Obeid Lutale.
The high-stakes proceedings have drawn regional attention as the legal team challenges what they term as procedural irregularities and political interference.
The courtroom was tense as Karua addressed the media shortly after the session, revealing that the prosecution had brought Dr Besigye and Lutale to court with the expectation that they would take plea.
However, things took a dramatic turn when Besigye attempted to raise a concern before the court — only to be denied the opportunity to speak.
“Our client was not given a chance to express himself, and that in itself is a breach of his fundamental rights,” Karua said.
“We do not yet know the exact nature of the concern he wanted to raise, but he will speak on it in due time.”
Karua emphasized the importance of due process and fair hearing, stating that the legal team is prepared to challenge any actions that undermine constitutional rights or the independence of the judiciary.
The presence of a senior Kenyan counsel at a Ugandan court underscores the growing regional solidarity among opposition movements and legal defenders in East Africa.
Karua’s involvement sends a strong message about cross-border legal cooperation and political accountability.
Dr Kizza Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and fierce critic of President Yoweri Museveni, has faced numerous arrests and court cases over the years.
This latest legal battle is seen by many as another chapter in Uganda’s ongoing struggle for democratic reform.
The case is set to continue later this week, with the legal team expected to file fresh objections against the manner in which the proceedings are being conducted.
