Lengo Karissa Mudzomba, the man who stunned Kenyans in 2014 by caning the late Raila Odinga during a rally in Kinango, Kwale County, has finally broken his silence, over a decade later.
During an interview on a local television station on Friday, October 17, 65-year-old Karissa expressed profound remorse for his past actions, revealing that he has carried weight of guilt since that fateful day.
He acknowledged that he never had the opportunity to personally apologize to Odinga prior to his death.
“Raila is no longer with us, but I continue to seek forgiveness from him, his family, and the people of Kenya.
My actions were wrong, and they have haunted me for many years,” Karissa stated, visibly emotional. “I acted out of ignorance and under peer pressure. It was never my intention to cause him harm.”
The incident in 2014, which took place during a CORD rally, shocked the nation.
Karissa came out of the crowd and struck Odinga with a cane while he was addressing supporters, causing chaos at the event. The then-Governor Salim Mvurya was also caught up in the turmoil.
After the attack, he was arrested and charged but was subsequently released on a Ksh 2,500 cash bail, which was covered by HAKI Africa.
The case was dropped after Raila Odinga publicly forgave him.In reflecting on Odinga’s legacy, Karissa described him as a figure of peace and unity.
“Raila was a true patriot. Kenya has lost a remarkable leader. I wish I could have told him how sorry I am,” he said softly, his voice filled with regret.
